Support Your Child at Home
School is the classroom, but home is where the learning gets reinforced. Here are five habits that make the biggest difference.
Step 1
Create a designated learning area
Set aside one quiet, well-lit spot for independent reading and homework. Keep pencils, paper and a planner there so your child can get started without hunting for supplies.
Step 2
Make tablet time learning time
If your child is on a tablet, have them spend at least 30 minutes on review and learning — IXL, Khan Academy, Starfall, ReadWorks or Boddle — before free screen time.
Step 3
Check backpacks, folders and planners daily
Homework folders and planners carry assignments, notes from teachers and important dates. A two-minute check each evening keeps everyone on the same page.
Step 4
Ask what they're learning
Go beyond "How was school?" Ask what they read, what they solved, what surprised them. Conversation helps children process and remember new learning.
Step 5
Quiz spelling words and vocabulary
Weekly spelling words and vocabulary are listed in your child's planner. A few minutes of practice each night beats cramming the night before the test.
